Reading Blog #2

I think the idea surrounding the art of noise is so deeply incredible. As someone who likes to sit and enjoy the world around me, I find that not enough people appreciate the sounds around them. I think it’s not only therapeutic, but eye opening to go find somewhere to sit and listen to whatever is going on. You can make a truly beautiful composition out of almost everything such as the tumble of the dryer while typing on a computer as I’m doing right now. It’s interesting to read about Cage as his project likely inspired so many people and could have played a role in what we know today as ASMR. My generation has become deeply entranced by sounds in day-to-day life. By isolating them or simply focusing on the sound, they find relocation and appreciation. Cage’s life in and of itself is a fascinating example of choice. So many people, when given the capability, choose art and expression over the world we are groomed to exist in. Because of his father, Cage was able to invent himself in his own image. Many of his decisions could have been a result of inspiration from his father, who was an inventor. People who have the ability and privilege to do so, turn against the hamster in a cage life we’ve built for ourselves and turn to art and in turn a sense of freedom. It opens your eyes to the world around you, and makes you want to be defiant against the wrongs that lie there.
